True beauty and youthfulness aren’t just about skincare or aesthetic treatments—they start from within. Recently, our co-founder, Milagros “Millie” Maldonado, sat down with Daniel Gao on the Beauty Talk podcast to explore the profound connection between mental wellness, trauma healing, and how we show up in the world.
Here are the key takeaways from her insightful interview on how holistic healing helps you live a healthier, more vibrant life.
From Corporate to a Calling
Millie’s path to becoming a licensed mental health counselor and trauma therapist wasn’t a straight line. She began her career in business management, working for a publishing firm. However, the tragic events of 9/11 shifted her perspective. Many of her clients in the cruise industry were deeply affected, allowing her to connect with them on a human level rather than just a business one. Combined with her background in theater—where she learned to bridge psychology with storytelling—Millie realized her true passion was helping people heal.
The Mind Gym Approach: Connecting Mind and Body
After a decade of consulting and working with non-profit organizations, Millie co-founded The Mind Gym alongside Eric Silva. They noticed that many traditional practices lacked a vital component: the connection between mental health and physical fitness. The Mind Gym was built on the philosophy that mental wellness isn’t just about our thought processes, but also about how we connect with and care for our physical bodies.
How Trauma Lives in the Nervous System
When we experience a traumatic event, our brain’s amygdala sends signals to our body to trigger a survival mechanism: fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. For most non-traumatic scares (like watching a horror movie), our brain eventually realizes we are safe and turns off the alarm.
However, with trauma, the body doesn’t get that “all clear” signal. The trauma gets stuck in the nervous system. When a person encounters a trigger—such as a specific smell or a loud noise—their whole nervous system reacts as if the trauma is happening all over again. This keeps individuals stuck in survival mode, which often manifests as anxiety, depression, or an inability to advocate for themselves.
Evidence-Based Healing: TIR and EMDR
To help clients process these deep-seated wounds, Millie utilizes evidence-based trauma approaches like TIR and EMDR to integrate the brain’s amygdala and hippocampus:
- TIR (Traumatic Incident Reduction): This is an exposure and narrative therapy. In a safe, non-judgmental environment, the client revisits and narrates their story through repetition, allowing them to process the event and realize they are no longer in that traumatic space.
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): Using guided eye movements, this approach helps the brain itself do the processing. Clients don’t have to talk through the entire story; instead, they process the memory and replace negative beliefs with positive cognitions.
Overcoming Attachment Wounds
Unprocessed trauma can significantly disrupt a person’s ability to trust and connect, leading to “attachment wounds”. How we form attachments as children heavily influences how we communicate and build relationships whether romantic, platonic, or professional in adulthood. Healing these wounds is essential for establishing secure, healthy connections.
Treating Mental Health Like Physical Wellness
One of the biggest myths Millie encounters is the idea that if a trauma happened in the past, you should just “get over it”. Another is the cultural stigma that therapy is only for people in active crisis.
Millie advocates for viewing mental health through the lens of “mental wellness”. Just as you wouldn’t feel ashamed to tell a friend you hired a personal trainer at the gym, you shouldn’t feel ashamed to seek out a therapist. Therapy is a proactive wellness tool to help you explore your blind spots, overcome challenges, and become the best version of yourself.
Redefining True Beauty
When asked what beauty means to her, Millie’s answer was profoundly simple: authenticity. The most beautiful individuals are not defined by their physical shape, but by their uniqueness and how authentically they show up for themselves and others.
